Into the Music with Robyn Johnston 1705 Saturday 6 August, 0105 Sunday 7 August, 1505 Friday 12 August on Radio National ( also available for streaming for four weeks after first broadcast at www.abc.net.au/rn/intothemusic)
When Riccardo Tesi was growing up in a non-musical household in Tuscany and listening to late sixties prog rock with his mates, life as a master of the diatonic accordion (organetto) must have seemed the unlikeliest of career prospects. In conversation with Robyn Johnston, this thoughtful composer, arranger and bandleader talks about his engagement with Italian folk tradition and how the transformation of those traditions is fundamental to his work as a leading player in creative European roots music and jazz.
Riccardo tells of his early quest to learn directly from traditional players and his first exposure to huge audiences on joining the band of the legendary folk singer Caterina Bueno, a figurehead of the Italian folk revival. We’ll hear music from Riccardo’s long and diverse recording career, including special projects with his long-time colleague, guitarist and singer Maurizio Geri. Italian music writer and lecturer Paolo Scarnecchia offers insights into the musical landscapes at the heart of Riccardo Tesi’s work and discusses the place of this music in Italian culture.
Riccardo also discusses the musical ethos of his phenomenal four-piece Banditaliana, the ensemble he’s led for the last nineteen years. We’ll have a taste of the band’s extraordinarily powerful presence on stage, as we hear from a concert recording made during their 2011 Australian tour, when Banditaliana’s vibrant musicianship delighted audiences in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and at the Fairbridge Festival in Western Australia.
